Glossary & Other Resources

[Please note that this and other pages are still being developed and I hope you’ll visit again.] I’ve been learning about ecology for many years, sharing native plants with my mom and dropping other hints about healthy communities. Then she read Sarah Stein’s book Noah’s Garden, which, like Doug Tallamy’s Bringing Nature Home, changed how we see the world around us, and she started telling me all the ecology stories I thought I’d been sharing for so long. The point is, sometimes words need to be clarified, but sometimes, the right storyteller helps carry the message through. I’m not sure I’m the later, but at least I can avoid glossing over words that may be new to some folks.

Herbaceous

Annual or perennial plants like wildflowers and grasses that die back to the ground and regrow from their roots if perennial (vs. woody plants like shrubs, trees, and vines that may loose their leaves but retain a stem or trunk from which new leaves or flowers will grow).

Noah’s Garden by Sarah Stein

A wonderful book about Sarah’s discovery of what supports wildlife in her yard and broader communities
